more than provide transportation to town. Over the years we have taken hikers just about anywhere they needed to go, including Northern Virginia for new hiking boots. We served many home cooked meals to hungry hikers, washed thenclothes, let them take a much needed shower, and offered a night or several nights on a couch instead of the ground. We have met some very interesting people over the years, some we will never forget.

My most recent southbound hiker was a young woman from N.Y. who was hiking alone. She told me she was reluctant to hitch-hike because, “you never know what kind of whackos are out there.” She said that if anyone stopped for her, she hoped it would be a woman. She got her wish. And to further reassure her, I told her I was on my way to a Bible study and she had no reason to worry about me. I dropped her off at
