Arthur Smith pins the sheriff’s badge on his wife, Sheriff-elect Connie Compton Smith, on Wednesday at the Rappahannock County Courthouse. Outgoing Sheriff Larry Sherertz, who is retiring after two terms, presented her with the star earlier that morning after she was sworn into office. Smith officially begins her term Jan. 1. Last Saturday, Lt Smith, along with several officers from the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office, was busy helping a young shopper pick out a belt at the K-Mart in Front Royal as part of the Shop With a Deputy program which is now in its 12th year.
