“Late in his life, John W. Glasker was baptized proudly with full immersion at Good Hope Baptist Church. On his deathbed at Slate Mills, his friend and hospice helper heard him murmur loudly, ‘Oh... I understand. I’m going Home!’ These were among his final words. He was laid to rest in 1992 above historic Shiloh Baptist Church in Woodville, his burial site overlooking one of the most beautiful mountain vistas in the United States. A large gathering of admirers, rich and poor, hand-dug and later covered his grave. His stone reads simply, ‘JW, you live on in our hearts.”’
“We may pause to ask what a man of JW Glasker’s intelligence, skill, rare wit and generosity of spirit might have achieved had he been allowed to remain in school, and been allowed to receive the education he never ceased longing for across the remainder of his life. This fine American, a unique native son of Rappahannock County, lived a full life, one rich in Mends, a life worthy of both emulation and commemoration.”
On December 11, 2007, the Rappahannock County School Board approved a letter thanking the anonymous donor for the generous memorial in honor of JW Glasker.
