He was a hard worker but a poor bargainer for wages. Yet he had a mighty circle of friendships, and in the manner of those who learn only via an oral tradition, he had a prodigious memory. He was a folksy, loquacious and magnificent raconteur. In the 1970s he was sometimes employed by James J. Kilpatrick or Eugene McCarthy, both residents of Woodville. Each of these politically astute pundits devoted an entire nationally syndicated news column, on more than one occasion, to rural wisdom they attributed directly to JW Glasker.”
“JW was a lifetime resident of Rappahannock County who seldom lived more than thirty miles from his birthplace in Woodville. He was never able to fully contain his disappointment in being forced to leave his first-grade desk at Scrabble School. In 1989 he was able to receive a meager social security retirement check, but continued working at odd jobs even after contracting and being treated for cancer. In 1991 a large circle of family and friends joined JW at the Sperryville Community Center to celebrate his life.”
