oil - as the Europeans are doing - is contributing to a new debate: ecology versus fuel. Vast areas of natural forests are being cleared and converted for soy farms in the Amazon and oil palm plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia. Clearing the land for such farms is expected to release nearly 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide, a lot more than what is saved using the biodiesel that it will produce. Then there’s the liberal use of petroleum based pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers for cultivating soy and palm oil that will fill the air with tons more of greenhouse gases.

In view of these facts, the answer seems clear. The wastes-to-energy program is the most feasible solution at this time. And with the new technology available, the program we plan to implement in Warrenton and Fauquier County can easily become the prototype for other communities to use as well.
