June, he did his thing as she did hers and provided her with nonstop conversation.

Exactly one week later, Trent came again and the first thing he said was, “Where’s Junie?” I guess when you spend a half hour bumping elbows with someone at the kitchen sink, you remember them fondly. I explained that Junie wasn’t coming today. But anot her good friend stopped by, Syd Stewart, Associate Pastor of Marshall UMC. Syd did some tidying up, plucked dead leaves off my neglected houseplants and set up the fixings for a tea party. My friend is a first time grandmother this year and she has known Trent all three years of his life. (He will be three years old on Dec. 28.) She pointed to a spot on the side of his neck, then leaned down and kissed that spot, saying, “I am gonna get some sugar!” The first time, this was a new game for him, but he soon got the hang of it. Syd gave and took “sugar” several times during her visit. The next time Trent came for a visit, he came up beside me as I was resting my leg in the recliner. He jutted his chin in the air, exposing his sweet little neck. He said, “Get some sugar, * Grammy!” Grammy obliged - again and again and again!

May you be blessed with friends who will wash your dishes, rub your feet, tidy your house, love your plants, make you tea, and listen to your woes. May you have the sharp memory of a three year old, so that you may always remember those dear friends. Merry Christmas*
