All tunas are raised trom private sources, including individuals, churches, civic groups, hunt clubs, outdoor organizations, businesses, foundations and corporations.
Fourteen percent of the money is allocated for overhead, while the expense of processing and distribution averages 60-65 cents per pound: The retail costs of the same cuts of beef are $3 per pound.
The organization uses 70 processors throughout the state. Newell-Fumiss says hunters in about forty counties don’t have nearby processors, preventing many from participating.
“We don’t do things to grow,” said NewellFumiss. “If we had more money for potential growth, we would set up refrigerated trailers in those counties.”
Once the organization has depleted its processing and distribution funds, it can no longer accept more deer.
This year, it is 50,000 pounds ahead of last year, and Newell-Fumiss suspects they will eventually have to turn hunters away.
“We try to get the word out as much as possible among processors and hunters to ensure that nobody is unnecessarily killing deer,” said Newell-Fumiss. “Ethical hunters aren’t going to kill deer that aren’t going to be utilized.” According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the state’s deer population now fluctuates between 850,000 and 1,050,000, close to what it was when
