“I really developed my love of fishing down there in the trout streams, like the Rush River and the Thornton River,” Mike told the Rappahannock News. “My father really instilled a love of fishing in my brother and I. I’d say some of our fondest memories revolve around times when we were fishing with our dad.”
Mike began bass fishing in tournaments in 1983 as part of a club in Northern Virginia. In some tournaments, he was competing against more than 200 other fishermen. He quickly established himself as one of the area’s best, winning the Commonwealth Bass masters tournament during his first year.
Ivan noticed his son’s talent and challenged him to move beyond the amateur level. Mike said he remembers in 1987 his father asked him, “Son, are you gonna be a big fish in a small pond or are you going to go out in the big pond with the pros?"
Mike decided to jump into the big pond. In the past few years, he has fished in 72 tournaments in locations as close as the Rjtomac River and as for away as Florida, Michigan and Ifexas.
His first major win came in the Everstart Tournament in August 2005
