Waste not, want not. That was David Horn’s motive when he founded Hunters for the Hungry in 1991.
From an initial goal of distributing 15,000 pounds of donated venison to Virginia’s hungry in the first year, the organization is aiming to donate 360,000 pounds of venison, equivalent to about 7,200 mature deer, in 2007.
Hunters for the Hungry, a tax-exempt organization whose Virginia headquarters is in Big Island, works with meat processors and food banks throughout the state to prepare and distribute donated venison to Virginia’s hungry.
“We take a bountiful natural resource that needs to be harvested and use it to get food to people in need,” said director Laura NewellFumiss. “It just makes sense. Waste not, want not.”
According to Newell-Fumiss, the potential exists to receive and distribute 500,000 pounds of venison annually in Virginia.
However, the organization lacks adequate finances to do so.
