wisn to make an anonymous contribution of $15,000 to Rappahannock County Elementary School in honor of my friend John W. Glasker (1927-92) of Woodville, VA.” The donor further requested that the gift be used to support a permanent memorial in the school’s library, which would be called “The John W. Glasker Library Memorial.” The donor has delivered the first installment of this gift to the school and plans to make a second installment in 2008.
The memorial will take the form of a large, separate and specifically designated bookshelf in the RCES libraiy, containing AfricanAmerican and other multiethnic books appropriate to grades K-7. John W. Glasker’s photograph, along with the story of his life, will be mounted on the bookshelf or on a nearby wall. The bookshelf has been constructed and books are being ordered per the donor’s request.
According to the donor, “The goal of the memorial is to honor JW Glasker’s lifelong personal longing and respect for literacy, the ability to read and write, and to promote the importance of literacy to the school-children of Rappahannock County. It is requested that each child at RCES be exposed to a brief unit on the life of John Glasker during their tenure at RCES, as a way of encouraging their journey forward into a life of books and learn• _ n
