Right now, Rappahannock’s is as high as it can be at 0.8, which means the county is responsible for paying roughly 80 percent of its public school costs.
Chappell’s hope is that a change in state law will help that situation. A law that allows school districts with fewer than 350 students to share services with other counties, and lower their “ability to pay” in the eyes of the state, should be raised to apply to districts with fewer than 1,200 students, he said.
He encouraged the group to contact Del. Todd Gilbert, R-15th, and Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-26th, to support the initiative in the General Assembly. Chappell also talked about plans to organize a citizen caravan to Richmond in February to show support for the measure.
