experiences to the State Champions for 1952 in the National 4-H Farm and Home Safety Program, which is sponsored annually by General Motors Corporation. Concluding his presentation, Lawrence addressed this inspiring charge to his young audience:
“There are three things I want you to remember tonight if you forget everything else I have said. First, young people in foreign countries are just the same as we are. We have the same hopes, desires and fears. We hope for peace ^pd prosperity. We fear war and want.
“Second, 4-H Club Work isn't the most important activity you can be in today. What's the use of building up a herd of purebred animals if they must be slaughtered to feed an invading army, as happened in Holland? What’s the use bf learning to sew fine clothes if you can’t find material or someplace *to wear them? What’s the advantage of a perfectly decorated room if a tank comes through the wall as 1 saw evidence of in Holland? The great, est activity anyone can be in today is working for world peace. None of us are doing enough. ’"Thirdly, just because you’ve won national 4-H honors, please v don’t think you’re through. When they asked me in Holland what 1 thought American youth needed most, I said, ’better examples.’ You are and will be the example for hundreds at home. If you really deserve these honors you have won, and I’m sure you do, you’re far from through. You have just begun.’’
It must have sounded a bit strange to our friends in Holland to hear a champion of champions from America telling what we need most in this country is “better examples”—here, where we too o£ten take such stuffy pride in our standard of living, just because it happens to be the world’s best.
There was no smugness in Lawrence Beymer’s attitude. No complacency. No satisfaction with things as they are. Those remarks of a young champion talking to other young champions had a most refreshing ring—they sounded a rear hope for the future of America.
