Mr. Pitts, president of the Virginia Electric Cooperative, at Bowling Green, was the feature speaker at a dinner in Washington attended by nearly 200 persons including directors of 18 of the 19 electric cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware and members of the delegations in Congress from these th*ee states.
Those present from the Northern Piedmont Electric Cooperative were H. it. Shelton and R. N. Early of Stanardsville; Mr. and Mrs. John S. Thornton and Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Jeffries of Culpeper; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas N. Broles of Reva; and Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Smith, Jr., of Locust Dale. The guests of honor were Senators A. Willis Robertson, John J. Williams and J. Allen Frear, Jr., also Congressman Howard W. Smith and Mrs. Smith, Porter Hardy and Mrs. Hardy, DeWtit S. Hyde and Mrs. Hyde, Edwin T. Congressman Howard W. Smith, representative from the Eight Congressional District, in commenting on the address which he had printed in the Congressional Record, characterized the speech as- “Thoughtful anld Instructive.”
He told Congress in session last Thursday that “the: successful progress made by the REA cooperatives demonstrates clearly that the REA and private industry can and do live and thrive in the same economy with junple room for public services for both.”
