“Who can sue and be sued if something isn’t done about this?” asked Kent Reeve.
“Anyone can be sued for anything at any time,” the superintendent replied, adding that the board of supervisors, school board and superintendent of schools could all conceivably be named in any class action suit.
“Can parents request state or federal intervention?” asked Fran Eldred.
Bloomer responded that this was possible and, in fact, had been done earlier in the year on another school related issue when a parent requested an investigation of the Title I program here by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He added that HEW representatives had not found any irregularities.
Bloomer reported that the high school teachers and administrators were currently conducting a self-evaluation of the high school’s educational program, copies of which would be sent to the state department of education. The selfevaluation will subsequently be read by a visiting committee of 18 to 20 teachers before they evaluate RCHS. This committee, he said, will also complete a report and the two reports will form the basis on which the school is judged for contineud accrediation.
No Effect On Funding
Loss of accreditation will not affect the financial support county schools receive from the state, according to Bloomer. Rappahannock would lose state money only if there is a gross misuse of funds or if the deficiencies should occur at the same time that the county fails to meet the state mandated per pupil funding level. Bloomer said. He noted that the minimum level would be met this year. The proposed operational budget for 1979-80 currently before the supervisors also meets the minimum S960 per pupil funding set by the state for next year, he said. ,
