(Continued from Page 1) bright flashes of lightning which caused them to shield their eyes as it grew more intense. By two o’clock the drizzling rain had become a downpour. Clouds hid the afternoon sun.
In the upstairs classroom, children in the fifth, sixth and seventh grades heard fellow 1 student,j Robert Reynolds, tell their teacher the clouds were beginning to shape into a tornado formation.
Robert was the only member of the class who had seen a tornado for he had lived in another part of the country before his family came to Woodville. Mrs. Elizabeth Browning, in an attempt to keep her students calm, told Robert, “It’s just a bad thunderstorm; we’ve all seen storms like this before.”
Miss Mary Starks decided to release her first through fourth grade students early. She knew that many of the children would be walking home and the wind was now furious.
