students, some as old as 17, currently attend classes at the elementary school, Bloomer noted. ‘‘A six-year plan, developed and approved (by the school board) stated that we will have a secondary special education class next year,” he said. Bloomer added that the high school class vfras first projected five years ago but had been ^ delayed by “more pressing needs.”
He maintained that parents of special education students will undoubtably pressure the school board to ensure that an “appropriate education program” is provided, as required by federal and state law. ”1 doubt if many hearing officers or judges would agree that 17-year-olds should be in 'an elementary setting,” he said.
Of the four new classrooms not designated in the schematic drawings for a specific use, one is planned for a reading lab to replace the current modular unit. Two will be used for business classes, correcting the existing situation where two classes meet in the same room at the same time. The fourth classroom is needed to meet state mandates that require the 60-some students taking reading lab to also have English as a separate course.
Expansion plans also include text book and instructional material storage areas, a custodial storage room and additional mechanical room to house a second heating unit.
