police cruisers pursued Mahoney at high speed from Front Royal to the town of Washington where Mahoney crashed into a bank on Fodderstack Road.
Mahoney fled from the car on foot, leaving a passenger, Susan Cash, in the abandoned vehicle. Witnesses report that police fired several shots at the man. Mahoney escaped capture and was arrested later that night after being treated for a gun shot wound in the arm at Warren Memorial Hospital.
According to assistant Commonwealth Attorney Casey Struckman, charges of felonious assault and driving on a revoked license have been filed against Mahoney in Warren County. Struckman declined to commend on the incident that led to the chase on the grounds that it might jeopardize Mahoney’s right to a fair trial. Mahoney is free on $1,000 bond for the Commonwealth’s charges.
Front Royal town warrants have been filed against Mahoney for reckless driving and failure to stop for a police officer. In Rappahannock County, Front Royal policeman Kevin W. Windle has also filed a warrant, charging Mahoney with attempting to disable or kill for trying to force Windle off the road by ramming his vehicle from the side.
According to a report in the May 4 issue of the Northern Virginia Daily, residents of the town have formally lodged complaints of police brutality and harassment with Front Royal’s police chieft town attorney and police commissioner.' y
