May has been designated Mental Health month in Rappahannock County. The announcement was made this week by Dr. Susan L. Vignola, Director of Consultation and Education at the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Mental Health Center.
According to Dr. Vignola, the observance recognizes the efforts of mental health workers in local agencies such as .the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic. Private citizens who contribute their time and energy to mental health associations also promote mental health yearround.
“Mental health is a term which is often little understood,” said Dr. Vignola. “To put it simply, it defines a person’s ability to work, to play, and to get along with oneself and others. No one can go through life and escape difficulties in these areas. Most of the time a person can work out such problems alone or with the help of a friend, minister, or physician. But there are times when professional counseling from a mental health worker is desirable,” Vignola maintained.
