At the close of a long executive session that ended at midnight, Johnson asked the school board members to tour the high school during the school day to see conditions there first hand. Chairman Beverly Massie and board members Alan Stokes, Walter Masterson and Paul Nichols agreed to meet SOS members at the high school on Thursday at 9:30. Board members Arthalinda Quaintance did not attend Tuesday’s meeting.

Following Johnson in the public presentations, Sharon Kilpatrick asked the board to reconsider its vote in adopting an alternative for construction at the high school that includes only four classrooms and expanded library, bathroom and storage facilities.

By not including an expansion to the cafeteria in the alternative forwarded to the supervisors, the board demonstrated ‘‘complete contempt for our children,” Mrs . Kilpatrick maintained. The cafeteria was inadequate when it was built for an enrollment of 300, she said, and is more than inadequate for a student body approaching 500.
