signs of the Eastern tent caterpillar are small, grey webs in the forked limbs of wild cherry, flowering crab and apple trees. As the caterpillar grows so does the web. The wild cherry trees are accustomed to being periodically defoliated. Most will grow new leaves after the caterpillar pupates and survive. When populations are high, problems can occur in the home orchard and on ornamentals. Caterpillars leave the nests to feed on the foliage during the day. Pick off or burn webs at night or spray entire tree with Sevin or methoxychlor or diazinon or Bacillus thuringiensis.
