Industrial arts class now meets in the same room that houses equipment and machinery for both industrial arts and building trades while building trades desk work is conducted in a storage closet without heat or venilation. The proposed expansion, Bloomer said, includes a classroom that both classes will share for desk work, allowing the machinery room to be used on a rotating basis for job training only.
Safety Hazards
“Have we ever had an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Agency) inspection here?” asked Guy Foster, citing possible safety hazards in the vocational program arising from two classes using the same room for desk work and job training on machinery at the same time.
Bloomer explained that OSHA had transfered responsibility for enforcement of school safety standards to the state in Virginia. This arrangement, he predicted, would change with responsibility reverting back to the federal agency once current conflicts over the scope of OSHA’s powers are resolved.
