Rappahannock County may have a representative at the 1980 Olympic Games. Cathy Lowe, physical education teacher at the elementary school, is trying out for the women’s field hockey team and if her past performance is any indication, she’d better start polishing her stick for the games.
At Longwood College, Lowe played varsity field hockey for four years, reaching national collegiate competition held at James Madison University when she was a sophomore. Her team finished sixth in the United States that year.
After graduation, she played with the Washington, D. C. women’s team and was selected in 1978 as a member of the number one Southeast team to compete in the U. S. Field Hockey Association’s national finals.
Lowe swept into the Rappahannock school system in September like a miniature tornado, packing energy enough for ten in her diminutive five foot, 1 inch 110 pound frame. She’s revitalized the elementary physical education program. Kids leave her class tired but exhilarated after discovering that they can run further and faster, do more than three sit-ups, score a soccer goal and swat a home run.
