Political Indoctrination
While we were at the prison, the women, who seemed to number about 120, were being read to, presumably by one of themselves, and the material was probably political indoctrination. We saw them sitting beside one another in cells, divided into groups of 15. The cells are set up to accommodate about nine people who sleep on raised grass-mat covered platforms which run from wall to wall on each side of the cell entrance. At the head of each sleeping space, the bedding and washing equipment of each prisoner was stored.
I did not feel that I learned much about the prisoners —what they had done to be imprisoned. They were discussed in statistical terms, not as cases. I was told that stealing especially is a problem among women. I suspected that a number of the men were there for Gang of Four activities.
