'"’Only male German ''Shepherds are used by the State Police and they must be registered with the American Kennel Club. Other specifications are that the dogs be: between one year and 18 months of age, a minimum of 70 pounds in weight, at least 25 inches in height at the shoulders, predominantly dark in color, with erect ears and of excellent mental and physical health.

Once an interested dog owner has contacted the State Police, a training instructor will visit the potential donor to view the dog. If the dog appears suitable for training, it will be taken to a local veterinarian for physical examination. If the animal is then considered acceptable, the owner signs an agreement to donate or sell the dog to the Department.
