The fact that there is little private property creates a society where problems involving disputes arising from ownership are few. The attempt in China is to persaude the offender to confess and to get such a person to repent and reform. While this method is fraught with dangers for the individual and subject to terrible abuse, it has merit. We were introduced to concepts, the application of which permit the society to solve or improve problems by radically different means from our own.
Comparison Impossible There is really no way to compare crime in China to that in the U.S., nor can we compare legal procedures. It is difficult for us not to think in legal terms. Our society encourages us to do so, but even in other Western societies, the percentage of
