Infant Screening
A test to detect hypothyroidism, a rare disease that causes mental retardation and poor physical growth, is now available to all infants through the Virginia Public Health Department.
Hypthyroidism is caused by an inability of the thyroid gland to produce enough thyroid hormone. It occurs once in about every 6,000 births. In Virginia that means about a dozen cases a year may be uncovered. Treatment consists of oral medication. The test is performed on a blood sample by the State's Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services. There is no charge for the tests.
