She and Martin bought the old house, surprised and pleased that its reasonable price and owner financing allowed them to swing the deal. Since then, they have worked continuously at refinishing floors, « hanging wall paper and other restoration projects.
Martin, who’d graduated with a degree in sociology from Vanderbilt University only to discover that he didn’t want to be a social worker, learned the art of stone masonry and started a separate contracting business. “He helps in the shop but to him, it’s more like a hobby," Cheri said.
The Woodard home sits on an acre surrounded by little out buildings. The extra space has allowed Martin to branch out into fertilizers. He sells no ordinary fertilizers—just organic supplies.
“We’ve always gardened organically,” said Cheri. “Our whole emphasis is on treating the soil like a living organism. You get healthy plants from healthy soil.”
In addition to manurebased fertilizers, Martin also stocks soil conditioners and ecological pesticides—ground flowers, sea week products that carry trace minerals to help plants as well as a taste that bugs don’t like and a biological insect control virus that, when mixed with water and applied to cabbage plants, paralizes the stomach of the cabbage worm.
