(Continued from Page 4) given permission to spend a morning there. This was an old prison, built in the 1920’s. It housed 1,900 prisoners, men and women. We were told this is the only prison in Peking, a city of four million people, and that only eight per cent of the former prisoners returned to crime after release.
The prison authorities ran two factories and a machine shop. Another factory employing women was shut down for renovations. One factory made socks of all sizes and colors; the other made plastic sandals. The machine shop kept the factory facilities in repair and made the molds for the plastic shoes—again, all sizes and colors. We were shown through these facilities and others including a hospital and clinic, and the kitchen where lunch was being prepared. We were briefed on the prisoners and their regimen of rehabilitation, permitted to ask any questions we wanted and we were allowed to take photographs, although before we entered the prison someone told us that we wouldn’t be able to do so.
