Family and friends also need to work with the patients toward recovery. A person with mental problems needs the ,, support of close ones. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away.

If you know of someone who may have a mental problem, show a little understanding, take time to talk and listen and, if necessary, seek professional help. Although family support is important in dealing with mental problems, an untrained eye and ear cannot pick up important clues that point to the source of a particular problem.

Having a mental problem is nothing to be ashamed of, no more than is a toothache. And just because a person has had a mental problem is no reason for that person to be shunned from social and employment opportunities.

Self-cures rarely are effective for physical illness and they are even less effective in the area of mental illness. Professional help is routine for physical illness. Professionals should be consulted for mental problems, too.
