A call for a tally man in Rappahannock won’t send a counter racing to the docks to tally bunches of ripe bananas. Here, on the county’s wooded hillsides, tally men work with forest warden Lyt Wood keeping track of type, diameter and heighth of hardwood trees marked for selective cutting.
The Virginia Division of Forestry will provide advice and assistance to landowners on tree management. At the landowner’s request, foresters will check hardwood stands, marking trees for selective cutting. “With fire fighting, it’s the most valuable service we provide,” said Wood. “It ensures a productive residual stand.”
Besides being beneficial for the ecological balance of the area, the Forestry Service's assistance program can pay financial dividends. As an example, Wood reported that a local landowner who’d decided to sell timber off his property called in loggers for an estimate and was offered $2,500 for wood from the 17 acres.
