Mrs. Bird kept a journal and shared her impressions of the land with her Rappahannock neighbors in three letters mailed to the News. She has written a postscript on her travels, expanding on her experiences.)
saw a beautifully kept Shanghai-made car awaiting, probably, a foreign worker living at our hotel in Peking. Through our Chinesespeaking tour member, we talked to the driver. He said, “This isn’t my car. It belongs to China.” He was polishing the engine, delighted with the car, and glad to show it to us.
Acupuncture treatments such as we saw, as opposed to acupuncture used as an anaesthetic for surgery, seem to be regarded as we do physical therapy. One isn’t cured by one treatment. The patient would return daily or weekly until cured or until it was determined that the treatment wasn’t working.
Besides the classroom experience I described as rote learning, in Canton we saw workers being taught at a factory school through TV. Also in Canton, at a Children’s Palace, which is similar to ones in other major cities, we saw exceptionally gifted students being trained in music, vocal and instrumental, calligraphy and other art, science, dancing and gymnastics. Ping pong was also being furiously pursued. For a period of two years at these special places children from 5 to 14 years old are brought from their regular schools for afterschool activities.
