Looking over what I wrote while in China, I find certain things which call for additional comment.
We were on what is termed a “study tour”, providing a survey whereby newcomers can begin to understand some aspects of Chinese society, hence the focus on education, health care, working and living conditions, and some political and social organization. Among these social enterprises were distributed visits to archeological and historical sites, and evening entertainments in all the cities we visited. There was, however, no important discussion of China’s principal concern, agriculture. The commune outside Canton which we visited was seen on the only rainy day we had in China and there we were invited to look at a hospital, a school, peasants homes, and to hear and question leaders about how the commune runs.
The study tour itinerary allowed us to see conditions over a 2,000 mile area of the country, observe regional differences, and begin to realize the fundamentally different approach to almost all aspects of life which China exemplifies. This latter was difficult for our group to grasp.
