To the editor.
Our School Board continues to have embarrassing moments of some magnitude and importance to the people of this County. We are losing teachers this year for various reasons but some of those reasons are directly connected to actions of the School Board.
Let me mention two of those leaving us: Mrs. Corina Fountain and Mr. Terry Finch. One is a proven teacher and the other very promising.
Mrs. Fountain had already signed her contract for this year and could only be released from that contract if the Board so desired. The Chairperson announced, as you duly recorded in your article, that the Board was releasing Mrs. Fountain from her contract “with regrets”.
1 would think they should express their regrets, for Mrs. Fountain is not only one of the finest teachers in our system but in the State as well. It is also well known that Mrs. Fountain could see with the present trend in the way the School Board handles school matters that the future was not promising in Rappahannock.
Let me mention one of those matters. The teachers were asking for one very important benefit this past year, a mandatory life insurance policy paid by the school system. The Superintendent included this in his recommended budget but the Board would not agree to it because, it is reported, the teachers would not make them, the School Board, the beneficiary. (And to me it is so ridiculous it is hard to believe, but nevertheless, it seems true).
