men were very busy. I expect this prison compares favorably with U.S. prisons—Lorton, for instance.
But no prison is a happy place to visit and I felt sorry for the prisoners. We were told the average term is 15 years, but this is a meaningless statistic, as they and I realized, because some are there for life, others for only a few years. Perhaps they meant to say that the usual sentence lasts 15 years.
We were told that one’s term is affected by the degree to which one' seems to reform. Later, I was told of a woman prisoner who had been released after 15 years even though her “thoughts” had not been reformed. As a released, unreconstructed prisoner, her condition was difficult since she was denied normal privileges. One of our group met her in one of our hotels where a relative was staying, trying to obtain permission for her to emigrate.
