Regarding growth rate. Wood explained that frequently, smaller trees with a slower growth rate are cut while larger, more vigorous trees are left. The vigorous trees, he said, will continue to grow at a faster rate, producing more saleable wood annually than the smaller trees.
The most valuable species of timber trees are white oak, red oak, ash, walnut and yellow poplar—all suitable for veneer, according to Wood.
As the forester bangs the trees with his sounding axe and marks their trunks with yellow paint he calls out the species, heighth and diameter for the tally man to keep track of on his sheets. The tally man fills out a separate sheet for each tree species found on the property, including the number of trees marked for selective cutting, average size, board feet and number of culls (trees to be downed but not counted in the harvest.)
