May is Mental Health Month, a time set aside to focus attention on the fact that there are persons who have trouble coping with everyday living.

Few persons want to talk or even think about mental health problems. For centuries mental illness has been a taboo subject, something to be whispered about but never discussed frankly or “outside the family.”.

Mental problems are problems of individuals, but those problems cannot be solved unless society as a whole is willing to bring them out into the open and try to find solutions. After all, many mental problems are directly or indirectly related to social pressures.

The Rappahannock Mental Health Ginic is one agency that offers a helping hand to persons with mental problems. The staff there is comprised of trained professionals who work with community volunteers to provide assistance for mentally disturbed patients.

The first, and perhaps the most important step, toward a cure for mental problems is to get the patient to admit that he or she does have a problem and is in need of help. Little
