Wood walks the tract, splashing big bright X’s on the trees to be taken down by loggers. He attempts to select trees in groups to help minimize damage from heavy logging equipment. “It’s almost like clear cutting in blocks,” he explained.
Generally, trees chosen for selective cutting have a diameter of 18-20 inches or larger. Smaller trees that are defective or located on a poor growing site are also cut. In addition, said Wood, smaller trees within a block of large trees will be taken while larger trees outside the cutting block may be left standing.
Wood explained that the damage caused by heavy logging equipment wouldn’t justify cutting an isolated 24 incher, no matter how fine the specimen. ”1 wish there was some way we could get light draft horses back into Rappahannock,” he joked.
Factors influencing the choice of a particular block on the tract for selective cutting include site conditions, residual stand (or what will be left after the loggers are through), timber defects, timber growth rate and species.
