Boy Dies

From Fall

Big Devil's Stairs in Harris Hallow claimed a victim last weekend when a Maryland teenager sustained head injuries in a fall that resulted in his death.

According to John Ritenour, Shenandoah’s assistant chief park ranger, 17-year-old Christopher McCollough was hiking with family and friends on Saturday, May 24, along the trail that runs from the Bluff trail to the park’s boundary. Reaching the canyon at the head of the hollow, Ritenour said, the youth left the group and fell while “rock scrambling.”

Another youngster hiked out of the park to make the emergency call, Ritenour said, but was unable to give the exact location of the accident. Washington volunteer rescue squad personnel, starting from the bottom of the trail, reached the scene before park rangers arrived after leaving from the top.

The boy was taken to Fauquier Hospital where he died from head injuries, according to Ritenour.
