Preparatory students of Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly are rehearsing daily for The Eumenides by Aeschylus, a fourth century Greek classic characterized by formal speeches, incantations, violence, high drama and suspense. The play will be the seventh annual dramatic production under the direction of Mrs. Pamela Lynn and will be performed in the school auditorium May 30 and 31 with an 8 p.m. curtain time. The public is invited to attend and admission is S2.50.
The play is a classical tragedy which dramatizes the struggle for power between the Old Gods (Furies), who claim to be the judges of all murderers of blood relatives, and the New Gods (Zeus, Athena, etc.), who are bound to protect sworn covenants. The central conflict of the play involves Orestes, son of Agamemnon, who killed his mother, Clytemnestra, to avenge the murder of his father by his mother.
The curtain opens to display the case in which the demonic Furies pursue Orestes to the temple of Athena where he is to be, judged. Suspense mounts as we ponder the fate of the' hero. With the outcome of
