“Mr. Atkins implied that Robert Eastham is a taxpayer and Guy Foster is not,” noted Charlotte Turnmeyer. “Guy Foster is a taxpayer too,” she stated.
"1 pay no real estate property tax,” Foster said, acknowledging that he doesn’t own land in the county. He reported that he did. however, pay $7,000 in federal income tax and $1,600 in state taxes last year. "Somewhere along the line, when I made out those checks, I sure felt like a taxpayer,” he said.
Challenging support for Eastham, Peggy Sutphin asked Barksdale if he would like to have one school board member run the entire school system.
“I think that would be very appropriate,” replied the chajrman of the Rappahannock * planning commission. . .
Herbert Foster asked why a new appointee should be considered when Wakefield District already has a “good man” on the school board. He asked if the opposition to Eastham was based on the incumbent’s opposition to raises for school teachers. Identifying himself as the spokesman for Rappahannock’s farmers, Foster said, “We’ve got to have somebody on the board to fight these taxes.”
