At the request of the Rappahannock school board, a fire safety inspection was conducted by state fire marshals at the high school on May 15.
According to the motion from school board member Robert Eastham, the inspection was to determine if boiler mishaps on May 7 and 8 that resulted in the evacuation of RCHS were the result of mechanical failure or human error and negligence.
The fire marshal’s report, dated May 19, cites mechanical problems with automatic controls as a cause of the boiler troubles.
The letter from K.R. Frese, state fire marshal, notes that the inspection request was “reportedly triggered by an overpressuring of the hot water heating system safety relief valve and an overfiring of the furnace which had occured a few days before."
Frese cited a check of the boiler system by L.M. Moten on May 12. “He is considered to be a certified boiler inspector by the State of Virginia and this office considers his report as a valid and competent inspection," Fese wrote.

Volunteers
The Rappahannock Athletic Association is attempting to conduct a summer youth baseball program. On Saturday, May 24 an organizational meeting was held and a grand total of three persons attended.
A second meeting has been set for tonight, Thursday, May 29 at seven o’clock in Sperryville fire hall. This meeting will decide whether or not there will be a baseball program.
“Time is running out. We must have volunteers show up Thursday or we’ll have to forget the program,” said association membqf Guy Foster.
