I
Real Worth
A sage once observed “We are valued either too highly or not high enough; we are never taken at our real worth”. After working for two years in Rappahannock County. I would like to state publicly that the “real worth” of Rappahannock County became apparent to me. Measuring the “real worth” of things is difficult in these days of double digit inflation, . fluctuating gold and oil prices, and the violation of time honored diplomatic immunity.
Nonetheless, without sounding too trite, I would like to say that my two years as the Mental Health Clinic Director have taught me the “real worth" of this county and its people. The residents of Rappahannock County have been open and receptive to our services and the various county agencies have readily referred people to us.
I want to thank you for giving us a chance to get started in this county. I value your openness to hear about our services and to participate in them when appropriate. For many people. Mental Health Services are - taboo and this reaction is understandable as it is difficult to talk about your problems to another person without embarrassment.
In our two years here we have tried to convey Freud’s notion that Mental Health consists in the ability to “love” and to “work”: to love and value ourselves and others and to work productively for our own vested interests and to work productively for the common good.
