Limits On Camper Numbers
Baumgardner advised the BZA that limits could be put on the number of campers allowed on the property but Gardiner balked. "If there were 100 or something like that. we would put limitations but with the numbers they had last year, it's not necessary," the chairman said after Rev. Savage reported 28 campers as the most on the site last year.
Charged with compromising. Admiral Gardiner vigorously denied the accusation. “We're not compromising anything." he stated. “We're trying to arrive at a settlement acceptable to as many residents as possible...We have full authority to deny, to put any condtions we care to put on it. If either side disagrees, they can go to a higher authority.” He acknowledged, however, that the zoning ordinance does not allow for campgrounds in a residential subdivision.
The BZA also stipulated that the necessary approvals from the health department must be submitted in writing for its inspection and that adequate trash containers must be provided. In addition, attendance at the camp meeting at any one time during the ten day session was limited to 400.
“What if 425 come?" Rev. Savage asked.
"If 425 come, we certainly won't expect you to turn them away but if 10,000 come, we expect you to go down to RFK stadium.” the chairman concluded.
