pointment of Guy Foster, Phyllis Irwin noted "a distinct lack of pride in the public school system" on the part of students, teachers and county officials.
“We don’t want to offer our children the minimum...We want to offer them the best we can,” she said, calling for local officials, parents and students to work together to find ways of improving public education here. “And I don’t mean mortgage the county to the hilt," she emphasized.
Noting that she regularly attended all school board meetings, Olga Fontaine added her support to Guy Foster’s nomination. In the county’s public school system, she said, "we need all we have and more.”
Arthur Smoot, who said he has four children who have completed school in Rappahannock and one still enrolled, described Robert Eastham as “one of the most capable men in this county" and called for his reappointment.
Recalling the list of requirements for school board members handed out by the trustees at last year’s meeting, Mary Beth Martin noted that Eastham didn’t meet many. "Guy Foster does," she added.
What the trustees listed were not requirements but “suggested criteria,” Johnson interjected.
