Fannon agreed that volunteer fire and rescue squads probably shouldn't be addressed under capital improvements. “But where should it be? It needs to go somewhere. ”
“The way it’s going, some of them are going to come under historical preservation,” commented Herbert Barksdale, in apparent reference to financial problems and potential bankruptcy faced by several county fire and rescue organizations.
By consensus, the board commissioners agreed to strike "excellent” from the description of coverage but made no other changes relating to fire and rescue.
4-Lane Route 211
Pete Estes proposed that the planning commission send a letter of recommendation to the supervisors along with the comprehensive plan, advocating that the board push for four-laning Route 211 from Washington to Sperryville.
Capelle suggested that this recommendation be included within the plan itself. “It’s pretty well on the bottom of the highway department’s priority list...You’re going to have to push the project if you want to see it completed.”
