contact one of the social agencies whose staff has experience in dealing with problems of this type. Agencies such as: the Rappahannock Health Department, Social Services (Welfare) and the Mental Halth Clinic can provide support to women in crisis. Local ministers can help also. The Mental Health Clinic, in particular, can provide crisis intervention, individual, marriage and family counseling and substance abuse therapy when drugs or alcohol are involved.
The Mental Health Clinic has a 24-hour emergency telephone counseling service (675-3329) for those seeking assistance. Recently the Rappahannock Ministerial Association along with area professionals has begun meeting to discuss ways of securing emergency shelter for battered wives. An overall plan has yet to be implemented but with their efforts and community support such crisis shelter can become a reality. In the meantime there is still a great deal of support available to the battered wife should she choose to take advantage of it. Of course, all inquiries will be handled with utmost confidentiality.
