On May 23, 1980 the County of Rappahannock and all its residents were done a severe injustice by the School Electoral Board with the appointment of Robert Eastham and J. Newbill Miller to the School Board. The travesty of holding a public hearing when the decisions have been made well in advance is a disservice to all people who call themselves citizens living in a democracy.
The right to access to a decent, or at least adequate, education is one of the few rights still treasured by most people in this country. The rights of the students and parents of the Rappahannock school system have been trampled and discarded with the appointments made last night. The process of selection used by the Electoral Board demonstrated to those residents of Rappahannock who chose to live here, as opposed to just happening to be born here, that democracy can be made to function for only one small group of people and not for the whole people as it was designed.
