The supervisors decided earlier this year to discontinue the levies on household goods, farm machinery, livestock and merchants capital. In addition, they limited the amount that tax on registered vehicles could go up to an increase of 30 percent over the revenue generated this year.
With a personal property tax of $1.43 per $100 of finance value, the maximum allowed by the supervisors’ decision, the 1981 tax rate on land will have to jump from $4.40 per $100 of assessed value to approximately $5.30 just to raise the same amount of money required by this year’s budget, according to Scoggin.
Since it is highly unlikely that the bottom line on Rappahannock's budget will not increase in 1981, it is probable that the rate will have to climb even higher than $5.30 in order to finance local g vernment for fiscal year 1981 82.
