In percentage of retail sales increase over the past five years. Rappahannock lagged behind the rest of the district with 42.2 per cent. The county's retail sales totalled $4.5 million in 1974 and $6.4 million in 1979. By comparison Fauquier sales climbed by 63.1 per cent from $56.3 million to $91.8 million; Culpeper's by 59.8 per cent from $46.6 million to $74.5 million; Madison by 52.1 per cent from $11.9 million to $18.1 million and Orange by 44.9 per cent from $30.3 million to $43.9 million.
Rappahannock’s population increased by the lowest percentage in the planning district, going from 5,199 to 6,022 between 1970 and 1980, a 15.83 per cent difference. Fauquier showed the largest percentage increase in population growth. 33.71 per cent, with Orange growing by 30.35 per cent. Culpeper by 22.86 per cent and Madison by 17.47 per cent.
It is interesting to note that Rappahannock County was the only jurisdiction in the planning district to experience a decline in population, minus three per cent, between 1960 and 1970. During that same period. Culpeper grew by approximately 20 per cent, Fauquier by nine per cent. Orange by six per cent and Madison by five per cent.
Based on 1970-1980 growth trends, the planning district’s data summary projects that Rappahannock’s population will reach 8.079 by the year 2000.
