Most school systems in Virginia have seventh graders at either a high school of middle school, Baines continued. This avoids the sociological problems that arise when seventh graders are placed in an elementary school environment that they can't cope with, she said.
"We desperately need a decent high school," Baines said. She told the school board that, as a ypung adult, she had tried to thank her father for all that he had done for her while she was growing up and his response was that she could only repay him by seeing that her children received the same.
“As a family person in Rappahannock County, I can't say that my children will receive the comparable education that my husband and I received in the ’60s," she said. Baines acknowledged that she didn't go to school in a rural county like Rappahannock. "But we’re in the ’80s" she concluded.
Speaking on behalf of the Rappahannock County Education Association. Don Bomberger went through the litany of RCHS space needs that has been pointed out time and again by high school teachers and administration.
Included on the list of capital outlay proposals for RCHS were a choral and music room with proper acoustics, textbook storage room, science and biology rooms with the laboratory facilities required by law and a faculty lounge where teachers could study, organize lesson plans and use duplicating machines, allowing the present lounge to be returned to its original designed use as a clinic. .
In addition, the RCEA proposal calls for more restrooms, a health classroom that will be required in the near future for the state mandated separation of health and phys ed classes, a mechanical equipment room to house heating equipment
